Cardboard Boxes Explained: Choosing the Right Box for Your Business
When it comes to packaging, cardboard boxes are still the most reliable and versatile solution — and at Shardlows Packaging, we’re proud to stock one of the widest ranges of cartons and boxes in New Zealand. Whether you need a simple shipping carton or a smart retail-ready box, we’ve got you covered.
And if you can’t find the exact size you need? We can arrange manufacturing boxes to your precise requirements.
Below, we break down the difference between the main types of boxes we supply, and how to choose the right one for your job.
What Is a Diecut Box?
A diecut box is a box that has been cut to shape using a steel cutting die — think of it like a giant cookie cutter designed especially for cardboard.
Because the die creates the exact template for the box, diecut styles have:
- More intricate shapes
- Built-in fold-in lids
- Neat lines and smart presentation
- No need for tape to close them
Dies can be custom-made to create a box in any shape, size or design, making them ideal for businesses wanting something a little more unique.
Our Stock Diecut Range
At Shardlows Packaging, we stock a wide range of standard-size diecut boxes, available in both:
- Natural brown kraft, or
- Clean white cardboard
They’re sold individually, so you don’t need to buy large cartons of a single size.
We can also custom print these diecut boxes to showcase your brand and elevate the look of your product. They’re perfect for gift packaging, online orders, beauty and wellness products, candles, ceramics, and any item that needs to make a good first impression.
What About Regular Cartons?
Regular shipping cartons — sometimes known as RSC cartons (Regular Slotted Cartons) — are the classic box most people think of when they hear the word “cardboard box.”
These cartons are made from a thicker grade of cardboard than diecut boxes, giving them strength and durability. They’re perfect for:
- Shipping products around the country
- Storage and warehousing
- Household removals
- Freight and distribution
Unlike diecut boxes, RSC cartons require tape to keep them closed. The upside is that they offer excellent protection for heavier or bulkier items.
Tapes That Work With Cartons
Because cartons need to be taped shut, we offer a large range of packaging tapes to suit your preferences and budget:
- Clear packaging tape (rubber or acrylic adhesive)
- Brown packaging tape
- Eco-friendly natural paper tape
Whatever you’re sealing, we have something that will keep your cartons secure from dispatch to delivery.
